New Delhi, March 11: The Lok Sabha today passed a bill seeking to give legal sanction to Aadhaar, disregarding Opposition demands to refer it to a parliamentary panel for scrutiny and protests over the legislation being presented as a money bill. The Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill, 2016, seeks to make the unique identification number programme a single-window mechanism to distribute subsidies and other direct benefits. Finance minister Arun Jaitley justified the decision to classify the proposed law as a money bill, pointing out that the legislation differed from a law planned by the UPA government on the scheme. He said the bill was intended to distribute government resources to the deserving.
